Learn how to do a Fakie back-side 360 or Caballerial

With Shawn Prosen

Shawn Prosen preforming a BS Caballerial spin.

Here are the quick steps to do a Caballerial on a skateboard:

  1. Start rolling fakie at a moderate but comfortable speed.
  2. Twist your shoulders in the front-side direction as you bend you knees.
  3. Simultaneously launch upward while unwinding your shoulders in the back-side direction.
  4. Pop the board mostly downward and a little in the direction you are spinning. I like to emphasize downward because you don't want your POP to get you off center from your skateboard.
  5. Suck your knees up and complete the rotation.
  6. Land the Fakie back-side 360. If you aren't getting a full 360° rotation while you'r aerial, then focus your landing on your front foot. This way you can pivot the rest of the way around.

What is a Fakie back-side 360

A fakie back-side 360 is the longer more technical term for a Caballerial.

A caballerial is when the skater rides in the fakie stance and ollies into the air and spins 360° in the back-side direction before landing back onto the board.

Step 1

Start rolling at a comfortable speed in the fakie stance.

Twist your shoulders and hip in the front-side direction. We do this because we need to unwind them as we launch into the air to help create rotational momentum. Since we have to spin a whole 360°, you should wind up enough to get a quick spin when you POP the skateboard.

Step 2

As you start to launch upward and right before you pop you should also be unwinding your shoulders quickly in the back-side direction.

At this point in the trick I like to focus my eyes on the center of the skateboard. This helps me to think focus on the axis of rotation, to keep my upper body centered up with the board, and also to spot my landing.

Take a look at the third photo above. Shawns pop is almost totally downward. He did pop a bit in the back-side direction, but mostly he is mostly focused on staying centered and getting height.

This isn''t the only technique. Mine are more low and fast but he gets the full rotation in the air, while I have to pivot to complete the 360°.

Step 3

This part is totally cool!

Shawn unwinds his shoulders so fast that he is already 90° into the rotation before he leaves the ground. So he only needs to rotate another 270° before he lands.

The tricky part is that he has learned to stay centered and spin quickly at the same time.

Step 4

At this point you have to stay ready to pivot on the front foot incase you didnt spin enough in the air.

On the first step 4 photo above notice how Shawns focus is on his flick foot. He was ready to pivot any remaining degrees he may not have achieved in the air.
